2. Sarah Jane Smith
PLAYED BY: Elisabeth Sladen
ONSCREEN: 1973-76, 81, 83, 2006-2011
RATING: 87.79%
No other companion has captured the hearts of generations in quite the same way as Sarah Jane Smith. Elisabeth Sladen's natural and convincing performance made her a favourite, in addition to the fact she was the companion during one of Doctor Who's best and most popular periods. Her popularity was so high that she returned to the series in for a one-off guest appearance, and impressed everyone so much by showing how well Sarah Jane still worked that she got her own spin-off show, and became adored by another generation of children and adults alike. Her unexpected death in 2011 shocked both die-hard fans and casual viewers alike, but in her truly iconic role as Sarah Jane she will never be forgotten.
I adore Sarah Jane and she is so totally deserving of second place. A character who was consistently good and an actress who's skill was quite amazing. What do you think?

1. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart
PLAYED BY: Nicholas Courtney
ONSCREEN: 1968, 1970-75, 83, 89, 2008
RATING: 88.15%
Well, there we go. Sir Alistair is your favourite Doctor Who character. Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart first appeared on our screens in 1968's The Web of Fear, where he assisted the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) in defeating the Great Intelligence. Four years later, the Doctor returned to Earth where the newly-appointed Brigadier helped him to overthrow a Cybermen invasion with the assistance of the recently created UNIT. When the Doctor was exiled to Earth by the Time Lords, he became UNIT's unofficial scientific adviser and though he and the Brigadier didn't at first see eye to eye, they soon became lifelong friends. When the Doctor's exile was lifted, he saw the Brigadier less and less, but he did bump into his old friend now and again, including in 1983's Mawdryn Undead, in which the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) encountered two versions of the Brig, one of whom had forgotten all his memories of the time he spent with the Doctor. In 2008, Sarah Jane Smith called on the long-since retired Brig for assistance, and although old, he was still ready and willing to fight. Nicholas Courtney's death in 2011 was a devastating loss for the Doctor Who community, although the Brig lives on in spirit through his daughter Kate Stewart, whom Matt Smith's Doctor encountered in 2012's The Power of Three.
I adore the Brig. A character full of warmth, and action and humour. But is he Doctor Who's greatest character? Well, the way I see it, the Brigadier was the doctor's best friend, the one he often turned to for help and one who, no matter how badly the Doctor treated him, remained loyal and willing right up until the end. And I think he deserves his number one placing. But do you?
